Located off the northwest coast of Africa, these Spanish islands feature varied, unique terrain. Stroll the volcanic black-sand beaches on Lanzarote, and view the otherworldly lunar landscapes of El Teide National Park on Tenerife. Spain's highest mountain, Mount Teide, is also located on Tenerife. Las Palmas on Grand Canary is the most popular port visited on Canary Islands cruises. Here, you can stop at the duty-free shops or ride through the narrow streets and plazas in a horse-drawn carriage. Adventurous types will like La Gomera -- formed from an inactive volcano, this island is filled with steep cliffs and ravines that are perfect for hiking and exploring. Half of the island is a natural park full of winding trails formerly used by shepherds.
The Canary Islands are featured on Western Mediterranean cruises. The Mediterranean cruise season lasts from late April to October, although a few ships cruise the region year-round.
