Corinth Canal

Built between 1881 and 1893, the Corinth Canal connects the Gulf of Corinth with the Saronic Gulf in the Aegean Sea. The canal was planned by Hungarian architects Istvan Turr and Bela Gerster, who were also involved in the early planning stages of the Panama Canal. Approximately 11,000 ships pass through the canal each year. It is 6.3 kilometers long, but is too narrow for ocean freighters and is used primarily by tourist ships traveling between the Eastern and Western Mediterranean.
