Danube River
Celebrated in Strauss's "Blue Danube Waltz," Europe's second-longest river originates in Germany's Black Forest region and flows through eight countries. Some cruises along this famous waterway start at the Rhine River, connecting with the Danube via the Main-Danube Canal and transporting passengers across Europe from the North Sea to the Black Sea. Ports along the Main River and Main-Danube Canal include such cities in Germany as Frankfurt, the country's financial and commercial core; Wurzburg, a regional winemaking hub and site of famous Baroque architecture; and Nuremberg and Bamberg. Cruises along lower parts of the Danube visit Vienna, Austria, one of Europe's cultural capitals; Budapest, Hungary, the "Queen of the Danube;" Sofia, Bulgaria; and Bucharest, Romania.
