The tiny, eight-square-mile island of St. Barthélemy is one of the Caribbean’s great gems. Red-roofed bungalows dot the hillsides; exquisite coves and beaches with pristine stretches of white sand lure day-trippers from nearby islands. Gustavia is the island’s tiny, enchanting capital, located around a magnificent harbor. Plaques on the narrow streets sometimes spell out names in both French and Swedish, a reminder of the days when the island was a Swedish colony.
