Measuring just 37 square miles and situated on a deep, narrow inlet with green hills topped by whitewashed houses, Ithaca is one of the smallest of the Ionian Islands. This mountainous island is famous for Odysseus, who lived here with his wife, Penelope and their son, Telemachus, as described in Homer's "Odyssey." Nymph's Cave is the spot where it is said that Odysseus hid the treasure he received from the Phoenicians. In the nearby village of Stavros is Mt. Pelikata, where ruins dating from Mycenaean era have been uncovered.
