Kumai is home to Tanjung Putting National Park, which provides a haven for many species including endangered orangutans and proboscis monkeys. Camp Leakey was founded as a base for scientists and park rangers researching the local wildlife. The area of the park has been protected in some form for several decades and has largely retained its wild and natural state.
