Ships visiting Lima dock in Callao, the country's principal port. Old homes, an 18th-century fortress and a naval museum are among attractions in Callao. Visitors often head to La Punta Beach or sail to one of the nearby islands for nature-watching. Callao and Lima blend to form a metropolitan area that is home to more than one-fourth of the country's population. Lima's capital boasts several impressive museums, such as the Museo de Oro del Peru with its collections of gold, silver and precious stones.
