Magaroya Island is the northernmost port in Norway; however, despite its extreme northern location, the waters around the island remain ice-free all year due to the North Atlantic current. The island’s landscape is mountainous and barren, with very few trees. Its greatest tourist attraction is the North Cape, which is located on Magaroya’s northern shore. In an effort to better accommodate all visitors to the Cape, an underwater tunnel was built between Magaroya and Norway’s mainland. It was, for a time, the longest and deepest underwater tunnel in the world. Popular activities on the island include fishing, hiking and bird-watching. The Cape is also home to a variety of interesting wildlife, including foxes, wolves and reindeer.
