The bustling town of Mahajanga affords a glimpse into the lives of the native Sakalava people. The port district includes a lively market along with several mosques, a cathedral, and other preserved buildings from the Colonial period. Visitors may stroll along a seaside promenade lined with palms and view the revered Mahajanga Baobab. This tree stands nearly 50 feet high and is thought to be one thousand years old.
