Mopelia, French Polynesia

Legend has it that Mopelia conceals the lost treasure of a World War I privateer known as the “Sea Devil.” Mopelia also boasts another treasure, as indicated in the nickname “Bird Island.” Red-footed boobies, brown noddies, fairy terns, and bristle-thighed curlews can be found here in abundance. Occasional sightings of the endangered blue (Tahiti) lorikeets have been noted as well.
