When sailing to Fort-de-France, be sure to look for the volcanic Mount Pelee situated 15 miles northwest on the island of Martinique. Despite its violent past, the mountain is beautiful with a gentle slope and ravines that support lush, beautiful forests. Though it has been inactive since 1932, Mount Pelee is one of the most active volcanoes in the West Indies and it is highly probable that it will erupt again in the future.
