Founded in 1716, this is the oldest city on the Mississippi, perched on a bluff 200 feet above the river. Natchez has more than 500 antebellum structures, and its downtown is lined with antique shops, restaurants and historic buildings. Excursions include tours of the Frogmore Plantation and cotton gin, where visitors can learn about the history of cotton production. During the popular monthlong Spring Pilgrimage, antebellum homes are open for touring and interpreters don lavish costumes for pre-Civil War era re-enactments.
