Formed by two stratovolcanoes and a thin strip of land joining them, Pagan Island has a history of volcanic turbulence. Today the northern volcano is still active, with recent lava flows available for viewing. Relics of war from the 1940s include a Japanese airstrip along with the ruins of several planes and bunkers. Rare animals appearing on Pagan include the Marianas Fruit Bat, the Micronesian Megapode, and the imposing Coconut Crab.
