Pulau Seribu means "Thousand Islands" and refers to the 114 or so small islands situated in the shallow waters off Jakarta's coast. Only seven islands are populated, with most of the people living in the northern group; the remaining islands are covered with coconut palms, intact wildlife and beautiful virgin beaches of white sand. It's difficult to believe that Jakarta is so close. As early as the 17th century, this popular island group was connected to Batavia by daily ferries, and is still a sought-after destination for both recreational and historical reasons.
