The capital of Ecuador, Quito sits at the foot of an array of mountains and volcanoes, only 14 miles south of the equator, at an altitude of 9,350 ft. The old town is still intact, complete with colonial buildings and churches, since being declared a world cultural heritage site by UNESCO in 1978. The northern part of the city is more modern, with shopping centers and restaurants located along the Avenida Amazonas. Be sure to visit the 16th century Monastery of San Francisco and El Panecillo (meaning the little bread loaf), a hill with beautiful views of the old town and a statue of the Virgin of Quito.
