Built during the first half of the 20th century, this quaint fishing village is situated on the side of a mountain on the island of Vestvegoy. While excursions are available to other towns within the Lofoten archipelago, don't sleep on Stamsund's Lofotr Viking Museum. Visits to this facility, which sits where one of the largest Viking houses once stood, gives you the chance to shoot a bow and arrow, perfect your ax-throwing technique, sail a Viking ship and enjoy singing, dancing and a traditional Nordic feast in the fully reconstructed chieftain's house. Fishermen can probe the area's waters for cod, while the surrounding terrain tempts hikers with its magnificent views. Given the town's location above the Arctic Circle, you can witness two of nature's most memorable spectacles here: the midnight sun in summer, and the northern lights in winter.
