Welland Canal
The Welland Canal is a ship channel that is part of the St. Lawrence Seaway. Running from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario, the channel allows ships to avoid Niagara Falls by directing them through the Niagara Escarpment. Approximately 40,000,000 metric tons of cargo is shipped annually through its waters by about 3,000 vessels. It serves as one of the major hubs for industrial and commercial shipping between Canada and the Great Lakes of the United States and played a large part in the development and growth of the city of Montreal.
