At the entrance to Jones Sound is Coburg Island, whose spectacular seabird cliffs are a designated National Wildlife Area. 30,000 pairs of black-legged kittiwakes and 160,000 pairs of thick-billed murres crowd the rocky ledges on this island almost completely covered by an ice cap. The scientific community recognized its importance from a biological perspective in 1975 when the area was designated as an International Biological Program Site. Coburg Island was declared a Key Migratory Bird Habitat Site by the Canadian Wildlife Service in 1984.
