Previously functioning as a prison, the island of Gorgona became National Natural Reservation Park in 1985 and is noted for a large number of endemic species resulting from its isolation from the Colombia mainland. The island's isolated, dense rainforest gives shelter to 46 species of reptile, including the Blue Anole, which is the only all-blue anole lizard in the world. Gorgona also has an abundant marine life; sea turtles, whales, whalesharks and whitetip sharks, roam the ocean. Between August and October humpback whales visit the island's shores with their newborn.
