A massive volcano forming three linked islands, Maug rises from the sea in a jagged yet beautiful ring around its submerged crater. Coconut palms and other tropical foliage grow in abundance, while many unusual species of seabirds such as the White-Collared Kingfisher and Micronesian Starling nest there. The islands have seen some industrial use in the past, but today lie uninhabited as the volcano itself continues its centuries of peaceful silence.
