Paramushir is a volcanic island located in the Kuril Islands chain in the Sea of Okhotsk. Severo-Kurilsk is the administrative center of Paramushir, and is the only permanently populated settlement on the island. Of the 23 volcanoes that make up the rectangular island, at least five are active: Chikurachki, Fuss Peak, Lomonosov Group, Karpinsky Group, and Ebeko. Chikurachki is the highest peak on Paramushir, and the most recent volcano to erupt on the island, having done so in 2008.
