The low-lying lakes and marshlands of Shumshu on the Kuril Islands of Russia make it an excellent habitat for sea otters. Visitors have the opportunity to observe the lovable creatures feeding on kelp just offshore. Walking tours stop at an abandoned Japanese communication post from World War II and pass by fragments of Japanese, American and Russian airplanes from the same era. Licensed salmon fishing at Bolshoye Lake is available during the spawning period.
