One of the more unique landforms to be found in the Kuril Islands chain, the island of Simushir is comprised of a series of extinct and active volcanoes, spanning a length of 37 miles (59 km). Ruins of an early 20th century Russian submarine base can still be found in the northern Brouton Bay. Thanks to multiple eruptions occurring as recently as 1957, the historically active Zavaritzki volcano has impressively formed three calderas near the center of the island. The vast beauty of this diverse environment should be enjoyed in winter attire, as the nearby Oyashio Current creates a surprising subarctic climate on the island.
