Ships visiting Lima dock in Callao, the country's principal port. Old homes, an 18th-century fortress and a naval museum are among attractions in Callao. Visitors often head to La Punta Beach or sail to one of the nearby islands for nature-watching. Callao and Lima blend to form a metropolitan area that is home to more than one-fourth of the country's population. Lima's capital boasts several impressive museums, such as the Museo de Oro del Peru with its collections of gold, silver and precious stones. Other noteworthy sights include markets, plazas and colonial buildings. Lima is the gateway for tours to Machu Picchu, the "Lost City of the Incas" that sits high in the Andean peaks.
