Lavrion is one of the major ferry terminals for ships sailing along the Greek Isles, and is slowly transforming into a busy hub filled with restaurants, taverns, and cafes. Just south of Athens, Lavrion holds the oldest and largest amphitheatre in the country and was a major source of ancient industrialization and mining. Several unique minerals have been discovered through mining activity, and many are on display at the Mineralogical Museum, one of the most popular tourist spots. A gigantic, mysterious hole draws many collectors and geologists to the city because of the hole’s unexplained existence and the various rare minerals that have formed around it.
