Atuona is located on Atuona Bay on the southern side of Hiva Oa Island and serves as the administrative center for the southern group of the Marquesas Islands. The town is surrounded by beautiful mountains, including the highest point on the island, the peak Temetiu. The small town was also the final resting place of Paul Gauguin, who is buried in Atuona’s Calvary Cemetery. Atuona offers restaurants, snack bars, shopping, a small hospital and a post office.
