Located on the northeastern tip of the Bukit Peninsula in southern Bali, Benoa is a resort town that maintains its Balinese character. Before attracting vacationers with its peaceful beauty, Benoa was a village that thrived upon fishing, a commerce that continues amid growing tourism. More affordable and laid-back than the upscale Nusa Dua tourist enclave five minutes south, Benoa offers excellent scuba diving, water sports and palm-fringed beaches. Chinese and Hindu temples and a mosque are worth visiting and are indicative of the area's multicultural atmosphere. Of particular interest is the pilgrimage temple of Tanah Lot, which is located on a rocky islet that becomes cut off from the mainland at high tide.
