While the island of Iturup may be the largest of all the Kuril Islands, it is minimally populated, leaving most of the island to be enjoyed as a natural wonder. Russia and Japan both claim the island as part of their respective territories, and the dispute that began after the Second World War is still open for negotiations today. History buffs can appreciate the significance of these shores as Iturup's eastern coast was the last stop for a Japanese cruiser fleet en route to attack the American naval base at Pearl Harbor in 1941. Spend your time on the island visiting the naturally heated hot springs, hiking through gorgeous Pacific island terrain and keeping all eyes peeled for various species of wildlife.
