Mainz has a long and rich history, which can be seen in Roman remains dating back 2,000 years and 17th-century Baroque buildings. The most striking building is St. Martins Dom, the imposing 1,000-year-old cathedral. Lovers of history and art will also want to visit the Church of St. Stephan with windows by Marc Chagall; the Gutenbergmuseum, with original Gutenberg Bibles; and the Museum für Antique Schiffahrt, with remains of five Roman warships and full-size models.
