Herman Melville was inspired to write "Moby-Dick" when he sailed out of New Bedford, which is still the "whaling capital of the world" and an active fishing port. Visit the Seamen's Bethel and New Bedford Whaling Museum, which boasts the largest collection of whaling artifacts anywhere. The city was also an important stop on the Underground Railroad, and Frederick Douglass was freed here. The County Street historic area features dozens of whaling era buildings, including the Rotch-Jones-Duff House & Garden Museum and the Zeiterion Theatre.
