Also known as "The Bonnie Isle", Whalsay is a fertile, peat-covered island located east of the Shetland Mainland. Attractions on the island include the settlement of Sudheim, where the Scottish poet Hugh MacDiarmid lived in the 1930s and early 1940s, and Symbister House, a large, Georgian mansion overlooking picturesque Symbister Harbor.
