Girdwood rests approximately 36 miles south of Anchorage and is surrounded by the Chugach Mountain Range. This small mountain town boasts lush forest and a rich history. Originally named Glacier City, it was changed by James Girdwood who had multiple gold claims in the area. The town was a supply camp for the gold miners in the area, and railroad construction allowed for further development of Girdwood in the early 1900s. With an economy now based mostly on tourism, Girdwood is the only "year round" resort found in Alaska.
