First settled in 1570, this island is well known for its history and attracts many tourists, most of them veterans. The area's important part in World War II has left many of the buildings on the island destroyed, and most of them have not been restored due to respect for the soldiers who died there. The Pacific War Memorial was built by the United States to honor everyone who fought valiantly in World War II. The Malinta Tunnel was the last stronghold of the military and is a popular destination for those interested in the war. There is also a Filipino Heroes Memorial and a Japanese garden of peace. The Corregidor lighthouse was constructed in 1853 and is one of the few remnants of the pre-war city. It was completely reconstructed in the 1950s.
