Located in Fukuoka Prefecture, Kitakyushu is a steel town with plenty of country area and diverse, beautiful nature surrounding it. It pairs up with Shimonoseki to create part of the Kanmon Straits area, and was formed in 1963 by combining the five smaller cities of Kokura, Moji, Wakamatsu, and Yahata to create one administrative fiat. The heart of Kitakyushu is at Kokura, a feudal castle town that guards the Straits of Shimonoseki. Visitors can travel between attractions in Kitakyushu via Monorail or the Nishitetsu Bus. For those looking to explore the surrounding nature, Hiraodai is a karst plateau located in Kokura Minami war, and is home to Shonyudo, a cave that allows visitors to wade through cold water in midsummer. Other sites include Mount Sarakura, Iwaya Beach, Sugao no taki waterfall, and Kawachi Fuji Garden. Travelers who wish to explore in town can visit one of the many museums around or go shopping on the Riverwalk, Uomachi, or Izutsuya.
