While there are traces of human activity that date back to the Nordic Bronze Age, Örnsköldvik did not become an official city until 1894. Travelers can explore the nearby Roman Iron Age village called Gene fornby. The village was excavated in the late 1900s to reveal various buildings including a forge thought to be the largest in prehistoric Scandinavia. Other notable activities include hiking along the High Coast, winter sports such as skiing or ice hockey, and and indoor waterpark called Paradisbadet.
