Santa Maria Island is the southernmost and oldest island in the Azores, known for its warm, dry climate and sandy beaches-unique in the archipelago. Its landscape features rolling hills, vineyards and the striking red desert area of Barreiro da Faneca. The island also holds historical significance as the first landfall of Christopher Columbus on his return from the Americas.
