Shima is located in the southeastern part of Mie. It is home to Japan’s most sacred Shinto shrines, the Ise Shrines. The Inner Shrine enshrines Shinto’s most important diety, the Sun Goddess, so it is considered the most sacred shrine in Japan. Aside from religiously significant areas, theme parks dot the city and pearl divers are often seen along the coast. Since pearls are so important to Shima, they have an entire museum dedicated to teaching visitors about pearl cultivation. The entire city has been designated a national park by the government of Japan due to its natural beauty.
