South Spitsbergen National Park covers the southernmost part of the island of Spitsbergen. The western coast of is home to the highest and most alpine mountain formations in the park, while the eastern coast mostly consists of barren moraines and glacial areas. The national park also contains many of the largest bird colonies in Svalbard, and Hornsund, the dominant fjord, is an important spring habitat for polar bears.
