Formerly known as Nguiu, this community on Bathurst Island is home to a rich and largely undiscovered history. The Tiwi islanders, one of the most intact Aboriginal cultures left in Australia. have their own language unique to the region, and produce great works of indigenous art. Paintings and murals collected in the township's museum depict a number of religious and poetic subjects. The Early Mission Precinct houses a Catholic Church infused with aspects of Tiwi culture. Woven handcrafts and traditional dances are more possible features on the visitor's itinerary.
