An ancient "water town" spread out over lakes and streams, this modern-day suburb of Shanghai has 36 bridges connecting it. Some have nicknamed it the "Venice" of Shanghai. Certain passages like the stone Fangcheng bridge hearken back as far as the 16th century, offering a glimpse into China's rich past. Just offshore is the island of Putuoshan, a holy site for Buddhist pilgrims. Centered around the sacred peak of Mount Putuo, a community of monasteries and gardens ornament the sloping island. A 33-meter bronze statue dedicated to the goddess Guanyin stands there, on Longwu Hill.
