Site of an ancient Roman settlement and Emperor Trajan's second century bridge over the Danube, Drobreta-Turnu Severin boasts an excellent museum relating to the Iron Gate and the Danube's fauna. The bridge is an impressive feat of engineering and is considered a major achievement of the second century, which allowed the Emperor to travel across the Danube to conquer Dacia. The town has many other visible relics of its ancient past including the ruins of the Roman fortress and baths.
