On August 24, our solo cruisers hopped onboard the sleek
Norwegian
Viva for 9 days sailing to Turkey and Greece. Departing from Athens,
our group was ready for some food, fun and of course, wine!
Boarding a cruise ship can feel like checking into a floating resort.
After we went through security and presented our cruise documents, some
of our group settled into their cabins while others joined the First
Timers Orientation -- our fun way for new guests to prepare for the
upcoming days and connect with their fellow travelers.
After business wrapped up, the party kicked off at Syd Norman's Pour
House, where our group gathered for the Welcome Aboard Cocktail Party in
this tribute to iconic rock clubs.
Our first port was Volos, where
Robyn and Steven B. from
Whitleyville, TN took the opportunity to shop and stroll the streets at
their leisure.
Dennis G. from Boynton Beach, FL toured the
cobblestone-lined, twin villages of Makrinista and Portaria before
returning to the ship for our Tribute to Greece themed cocktail party.
Our group perfectly captured the vibe with a blue-and-white-themed party
at the Metropolitan Bar onboard.
Ephesus proved to be an adventure for everyone, especially
Riley
A. from Fort Myers, FL and
April W. from McKinney, TX who
bought the best souvenir, a Turkish rug. Exploring can be rigorous!
After 16,500 steps through this ancient marble city and the world's
largest amphitheater, our private excursion ended in Sirince, where we
refueled with authentic Turkish wine and delicacies.
Our overnight stay in Istanbul gave us the chance to dive into the local
culture and cuisine. Just ask
Paulette K. from New York, NY who
can confidently tell you that the baklava was worth it! From sunset boat
rides to a full-day Turkish bath experience, our group tried it all.
The fun continued as we cruised on to Santorini, where
Edward H.
from Tulsa, OK led our action and adventure guests on a 10-mile hike up
to the top of Fira, known for its iconic blue-roofed buildings. While
some of us hiked, others boarded our private bus to the village of Oia
on an excursion. We traveled along cobblestone streets, around
cliffsides and through lavascapes left by the surrounding volcanoes.
Don't worry, our group will always make time for wine! They raved about
the Vin Santo, a style of dessert wine made from the sun-dried grapes
only found in Santorini.
Day eight found us in Rhodes, where
Lawrence S. from Bordentown,
NJ along with some of our group, arranged a boat tour, complete with an
impromptu dance party and a swim in the ocean. With a lot of
high-intensity port days, it's easy to miss out on the late-night
onboard entertainment. However, our group always found its way to
Penrose for live music, Norwegian's first three-storied glass wall
atrium.
Our last day was in Crete, and it wouldn't be complete without another
opportunity to head to a winery and maybe an archaeological treasure or
two. We joined our guide through partially restored palaces, viewing the
royal living quarters, a theater area and 3,000-year-old indoor
plumbing! These separate, well-equipped royal suites were spread across
2 floors and their numerous corridors and staircases were lined with
beautiful frescoes -- an obvious contrast to the more public and
religious areas of the palace. After another gorgeous day, our group was
once again on the hunt for a tall glass of wine, and the Garakis Family
Winery did not disappoint. Nestled on the northern slopes of the hills,
this vineyard is perfectly sheltered from the hot summer winds. Fun
fact: the oldest known grape press was discovered in Crete, dating all
the way back to 1600 B.C.!
Our time together was unforgettable as we sampled local flavors with
great company. We loved meeting everyone and watching our solo travelers
connect through culture and exploration. We hope to see you again on a
future journey!
