Amman, the capital city of the Kingdom of Jordan, spreads across nineteen hills in the country's north-west. The city's temperate climate means that almost half of Jordan's diverse population lives in or around the capital, resulting in a blend of cultures and new construction among the buildings from the city's ancient past. Amman's history goes back thousands of years, and can best be viewed in the city's center, especially at the Citadel, where visitors will find Roman temples and thousand year old Byzantine churches, as well as the relics collected at the National Archaeological Museum. The Citadel also provides a spectacular view of the city. Amman also provides its share of modern comforts: the city's streets are full of shops and cafes, and even shopping malls selling designer brands and Starbucks coffee.
