Bathurst is one of the Tiwi Islands located in the Northern Territory of Australia. The largest settlement on the island is Wurrumiyanga, a community founded as a Catholic mission in 1911. Bathurst is about 1,000 square miles of densely wooded terrain, and in 1941 it was declared an Aboriginal reserve along with its sister island, Melville Island. Visitors to the island will find very basic infrastructure along with the more traditional customs such as evidence of the hunting and fishing culture. There is also the option for an organized land tour or a chartered fishing tour.
