Butrint is a National Park and World Heritage site that lies just south of Sarande. It is one of the most important archaeological sites in the Mediterranean as it has been around for thousands of years through Neolithic tribes, Greeks, Romans, Ottomans, and many more settlements between. Abandoned during the Ottoman period, the land is now covered in vegetation and many of the buildings are in ruin. Among these ruins visitors can find a theater, the Temple of Asklepios, the remains of a large Roman house, the Greek Well of Nymphs, and Illyrian city walls. If you scale the acropolis, you will find a fantastic view of the area, as well as the bay. In addition to these archaeological finds, Butrint offers pretty lagoons, marshlands, forests, and olive groves throughout the park. For travelers who want to visit Saranda, buses run between the two locations daily.
