As the first deep-water port in Northern Vietnam, Cai Lan is the gateway to the capital city of Hanoi. Located on the right bank of the Red River, this deeply rooted city is considered the cultural center of the country with a collection of sites that have survived several centuries. Visit one of the 600 ancient temples and pagodas, countless museums including the popular Vietnam National History Museum, and the oldest university in Vietnam, the Temple of Literature. Walking through the Old Quarter, visitors can see the original layout of the city and browse through the street merchant's original jewelry, special silks, and clothing at the night market. The West Lake is the largest lake in Hanoi and holds several floating restaurants with local cuisine and scenic views of this popular tourist spot. Take a trip north to the massive Ban Gioc Waterfall for a more secluded and intimate view of the serene countryside.
