This former fishing village on the Yucatan Peninsula has grown into one of Mexico's most popular Caribbean vacation destinations, where beautiful white-sand beaches fringe turquoise waters. The resort also is known for its lively nightlife. Many cruise passengers opt for a shore excursion to ancient Mayan ruins or to Xcaret nature park, where you can swim in the underground rivers of this 250-acre preserve. Ships bound for Cancun may call 20 minutes south at Puerto Morelos, a sleepy fishing and beach town. There's great snorkeling, jungle expeditions and deep-sea fishing here, but it retains its small-town charm. Expect peaceful, solitary beaches.
