Elcho Island is a remote land, and the district of Galiwin'ku is home a large Aboriginal community. Permission to visit the district is required by law and can be obtained through government services. Elcho Island operates a community-run art center in which local artists produce crafts using materials found in the surrounding earth. Woven baskets, carvings, and jewelry are all handmade and dyed with natural methods. It is recommended that visitors wishing to visit contact the gallery well in advance, as the center may be closed for field or cultural commitments.
