Well-named for its fiery constitution, the island of Fogo is mostly a large stratovolcano. Beautiful lava rock makes up much of its terrain, while the conical mouth ("Pico de Fogo") smolders in the center. Visitors can hike the rich lava landscape and learn about recent eruptions and their impact on the local villages. The town of Sao Filipe features architecture preserved from colonial times.
