A World Heritage site within Great Sandy National Park, Fraser Island is a unique combination of sand and rainforest with a long history of human habitation. Aboriginal tribes are believed to have lived on the island for 5,000 years. In addition, Fraser Island is home to a famous population of dingoes, now protected, as well as hundreds of exotic bird species. The oceanliner SS Maheno washed ashore in 1935 during a cyclone, and it remains on the beach to this day as a popular tourist attraction.
